Fun Exotic Fruits to Expand Your Pallet

There are lots of fun, exotic fruits sold regularly in your town that you're probably not eating. Does apples, bananas, oranges, grapes, lemons and limes sound familiar? Do you buy the occasional Kiwi? Grapefruit? or Tangerine? Well, it's time to make those taste buds jump with excitement.

You've probably heard of the mango; I had but didn't love them until a short stint in Jamaica where they grow rampant. Mangos need to be peeled and are juicy, messy - but really are extraordinarily tasty.

How about Kumquats? They're the size of grapes, but have the look and feel of oranges. You can actually pop in them in your mouth and eat them - though some spit the seeds out. They're great for making orange zest for recipes and you can even boil them and serve them with fish.

Carambola is a word you've probably never heard, but I bet you've seen them a couple times per year. They're greenish - yellow and are usually labeled star fruit because they look like a star. They taste a bit like apples, but are tart-ier and crunchier. You can eat the peel so they make a good substitute for apples. Cut them down the middle and add star-shaped garnishes to your dinner plate.

Guava is weird to me. Very healthy and they taste a bit like cinnamon - but I don't like them much. They're yellow-ish pink and rival broccoli for their antioxidant content. You'll need to peel your guava fruit, and have a paper towel handy because you'll need it for the juice.

Finally, my kids' favorite is Ugli Fruit. What kid wouldn't like a name like that? A cross between a grapefruit, orange and tangerine, the ugli fruit is one bundle of citrus wonder. No idea for ugli fruit is better than peeling it and eating it just like an orange. The benefit is - they have 75% of your daily vitamin C.
