Will Fruit Really Make You Fat?

One of the most disturbing things I have heard going on in the fitness world has been the recommendation that "people don't eat too much fruit."

Are you kidding me?

Let's address the reason why people think fruit will make you fat.

Fruit contains a lot of sugar. Yes, fruit does have a good amount of sugar. However, it's natural sugar. Your body is going to metabolic the sugar in fruit (fructose) differently than it would metabolize the high fructose corn syrup in soft drinks. In addition, fruit has lots of good-for-you-stuff in it as well. Fruit is filled with phytochemicals and antioxidants as well as other important nutrients.

In addition to being jam packed with healthy, vital nutrients, fruit also has fiber. The majority of people don't get enough fiber as it is, so why in the world would we tell them to eat less fruit?

Think about this: is too much fruit really the main problem people have with their diets? Is eating too much fruit really the reason people have extra fat?

Seriously, think about that question for a second. Heck, most people are lucky to eat one serving of vegetables a day, so why are we debating whether or not to eat a banana!

Here's the take home message: don't worry about eating fruit, as long as it is fresh or frozen with no added sugars. Avoid canned fruit because it is usually in syrup or added sugars.

The only people that may ever have to worry about limiting fruit are people who compete in figure and body building competitions. If that's not you, pick the banana back up, and enjoy.

The benefits of eating fruits are many, and you would be wise to keep them in your diet. Don't believe the hype that fruit will negatively affect your physical appearance. In fact, that is quite the opposite. Fruit will only improve your body-inside and out.

Here's a bonus tip: eat a rainbow. By this I mean eat various colors of foods. Think blueberries, bananas, strawberries, oranges, etc. The more colors you eat, the bigger variety of nutrients you will get!
