Do I Need Vitamins and Minerals If I Eat Health Food?

"Health food" is classed as a balanced diet that should consist of plenty of fruit and vegetables, starchy foods such as wholegrain or granary bread, pasta and rice, protein-rich foods such as meat, fish, eggs and some dairy products. Your diet should be low in fat (especially saturated fat), salt and sugar.

A balanced diet should also contain lots of fruit, vegetables, wholegrain cereals and some milk and dairy products.

So do I need to take vitamins and minerals?

Vitamins and minerals are taken to supplement any deficiency you may have. Eating a balanced diet may be sufficient to obtain all the important vitamins and minerals you need but, whenever a deficiency is noticed, vitamin supplements can be taken to stop this bodily malfunction.

Are vitamins a health food?

A well-chosen multivitamin can benefit your health if you're not eating the recommended servings of food or avoiding specific food groups, such as the Atkins diet. Those who are pregnant, post-menopausal or following a restricted or vegetarian diet also need to ensure adequate nutrient intake, especially for vitamins D and B12, and folic acid. Take note because when it comes to nutrient and multivitamin supplements, more is not always better.

Is my health at risk from eating this food?

Vitamins and minerals aren't dangerous to your health unless you get too much of them. It would be hard to overdose on vitamins or minerals that you get from the food you eat. It is important to note, if you take supplements, you can easily take too much. This is even more of a risk if you take fat-soluble vitamins.

If you take too much of a certain vitamin or mineral it can lead to problems like interfering with medical tests or stop the way some medicines work. Its very important to talk with your doctor before you take any vitamin and mineral pills, especially if you take prescription medicines, have any health problems.
